A Northern California faculty district is testing out a novel answer to its housing scarcity for academics: asking group members to lease them rooms.

Superintendent Cheryl Jordan stated in a press release to NPR that the district had already gotten 55 responses to its request.
It was proof that district employees members had been “valued by our Milpitas group members, dad and mom and caregivers,” she stated.
Spokesperson Scott Forstner stated the district had not but heard from any workers who had secured a unit via the roughly week-old request to households.
The median house value in Milpitas, situated simply outdoors San Jose, is $1.3 million, in line with Realtor.com.
Roughly 4 in 5 California counties are seeing their median house costs rise yr over yr, information launched in August by the California Affiliation of Realtors exhibits.
Within the final yr, the Milpitas Unified College District misplaced 10 academics, officers stated. Seven moved to “extra reasonably priced” communities, and three left California.
Two surveys, carried out by the district in 2017 and 2021, confirmed that some employees members had lengthy commutes and lacked regular housing, Jordan stated at a latest faculty board assembly.
The Milpitas faculty board declared in a decision that “the hole between those that can afford a house within the San Francisco Bay Space and those that can not, is widening at an alarming charge, with some having to carry part-time jobs to fulfill month-to-month housing bills, and reasonably priced rental housing is in brief provide.”
The district has explored different methods to enhance housing choices for academics, resembling coordinating with businesses that supply loans to educators and contemplating the development of accent dwelling models, that are small houses on the identical lot as bigger ones.
