Louisa teacher starts 105-mile run to Washington D.C.

LOUISA COUNTY, Va. (WWBT) – A Louisa County trainer is lacing up her functioning shoes to run to Washington D.C., to raise dollars for student scholarships.

On Monday early morning, Kate Fletcher started out her 105-mile operate from Louisa County High College for the Lion Satisfaction Operate with assist from students, faculty and employees.

“There are likely to be all varieties of feelings. There will be occasions that I’m wanting to stop for the reason that all those periods transpire, but they happen in daily life, far too,” stated Fletcher at the starting line. “I am as completely ready as I’ll at any time be.”

Just before her operate, college students, team and college lined the entrance of Louisa County Substantial Faculty to cheer on Ms. Fletcher on her journey to D.C.

“Perseverance, resilience, you title it. That is Ms. Fletcher,” stated Superintendent Doug Straley.

The English teacher’s journey to operate started various many years back with determination from her college students.

“I had some students in a remedial class, who had been battling very a little bit to go our standardized assessments,” she explained. “I experienced viewed them persevere and endure when they truly wanted to give up, but they didn’t.”

This perseverance motivated Fletcher to start out running laps all around a track in the vicinity of her house, which finally turned into a fundraising movement to elevate money for scholar scholarships.

Because 2016, far more than $70,000 has been raised by means of the Lion Delight Operate, which has assisted more than 25 seniors from Louisa go to university.

“The run will have hills, and it will have valleys,” Fletcher said. “It’s clearly a enormous stamina problem, and it’s meant to really symbolize what individuals kids go by means of.”

This year’s run to D.C. is no different, as Fletcher looks to raise $50,000 to not only support seniors with their subsequent ways after graduation but to display them there’s no limit to what they can do.

“I hope it reveals them how substantially prospective they have and that we can all go even additional than we almost certainly sometimes assume we cannot,” Fletcher explained. “It’s that more durable street that has the struggles that genuinely displays us what we’re able of.”

For the duration of this year’s run, Fletcher’s position will be are living-streamed to all 6 faculties in Louisa County, with support from a GPS tracker, to offer students and staff with a glimpse at her progress.
